Waze Carpool was only launched in San Francisco in May 2016. It has registered tens of thousands of riders and drivers there. Waze will launch a carpooling app across California that lets drivers offer rides to people traveling on a similar route on June 6. Passengers who wish to carpool with a driver will be able to download a separate app called Waze Carpool and request a ride. 

Riders on Waze Carpool pay drivers a small stipend that covers the cost of gas and some wear and tear on the vehicle. Waze has tweaked the pricing this spring as it figures out the sweet spot for making carpooling attractive to both riders and drivers. Waze Carpool operates more like an old-school carpool, where riders chip in only to cover the cost of gas. The result is that passengers get an affordable and convenient ride, while drivers get gas money and, in some cases, enough bottoms in seats to use carpool lanes.

There will be safety features familiar to anyone who has used Uber or Lyft. Drivers and passengers will be able to upload a photo of themselves to the app. There's a five-star rating system, rider and driver endorsements, and the ability to communicate within the app so that no one has to reveal a phone number. Users will also be able to link to their Facebook and LinkedIn accounts.
