Aftershock is becoming part of a new unit created by Fox in January called FoxNext that focuses on videogames, virtual and augmented reality and location-based entertainment. Like other Hollywood studios, Fox had struggled to determine which of its divisions should oversee efforts in these emerging businesses. Fox ended up creating this new unit that reports to both the head of television, Peter Rice, and head of film, Stacey Snider.
The Avatar mobile game has already been in development at Aftershock for quite some time. Aftershock even has had talks with Fox and Cameron's own Lightstorm Entertainment for the multiplayer mobile strategy game based on the famed sci-fiction film. Despite the acquisition, Aftershock's headquarters will remain in Los Angeles and san Francisco. As far as the Avatar mobile game is concerned, FoxNet president Salil Mehta stated that rollout is expected sometime before the sequel.
Aftershock will helm "a number of projects" including a massively multiplayer strategy game based in James Cameron's Avatar series. Cameron and Fox are currently working on a new Avatar film that's slated to release in 2020. And Fox is currently working on four film sequels to "Avatar," the first of which is scheduled for release in 2020, 11 years after the original, which earned a record $2.7 billion world-wide.
